Fulbright Faculty Development Program

The Fulbright Faculty Development Program recognizes and rewards Ecuadorian university faculty who have demonstrated their potential to contribute to their disciplines as well as to their academic institutions by offering grants for Master and Ph.D. studies in the United States.

Host universities offer tuition, scholarships, assistantships, and other financial support to Fulbright grantees. Ecuadorian universities often assist their faculty participating in the program by maintaining their salaries in absentia, providing loans or grants to cover dependent expenses, by supporting research and others.

After their studies in the United States, grantees resume teaching, or research, and, in some cases, administrative positions at their home institutions, sharing the benefits of their educational experience.

Applicants to the program should be responsible citizens who can represent Ecuador and can contribute to the friendship and understanding between the United States and Ecuador.

SELECTION PROCESS

Nomination of Candidates
After making an internal selection, universities send in the names of their candidates to the Fulbright Commission. Candidates are then notified by the Commission and asked to complete an application.

Exams
All candidates are given a general aptitude exam in Spanish and an exam to evaluate their English proficiency. Both exams are given on the same day. These exams are used for the selection process only.

All selected candidates must take the official TOEFL, GRE or GMAT during the last quarter of the year and should prepare for them accordingly.

Pre-Selection
Based on an evaluation of candidate's documentation, study objectives and test results, the cooperating agency pre-selects candidates to be interviewed. Pre-selected candidates are notified by the Fulbright Commission to attend an interview.

Interview
Interviews are held in Quito and Guayaquil. Each candidate is interviewed by a panel made up of representatives from the Fulbright Commission, the Embassy of the United States, members of the Board of Directors, a representative of the administrative agency and Fulbright scholars. The interview offers the applicants the opportunity to present the academic and personal goals. Interview dates cannot be changed.

Orientation
All Fulbright grantees and their immediate families are required to attend a pre-departure orientation.
