Ecuadorian Citizens "Our future is not in the stars but in our own minds and hearts." - J. William Fulbright The selection of Fulbright Scholars in Ecuador is based on a national open competition and academic and professional excellence. Candidates will be considered without respect to ethnicity, religion, national origin, and gender. Applicants should be representative and responsible citizens of Ecuador, who have leadership potential and who can give a fair and complete view of the country, thus contributing to the Fulbright mission of mutual understanding by sharing ideas and experiences with U.S. citizens and citizens from other countries. The Commission seeks diversity and encourages applicants from the provinces. Grants are highly competitive. The strict academic criteria used is as demanding as the criteria established by U.S. universities, including sufficient proficiency of English, so that candidates admitted to a post graduate program receive the necessary financial aid. All applicants must have a university degree. Once documentation has been reviewed, preliminary selected candidates will be invited to an interview. The Selection Committee, composed of Board Members, U.S. Fulbright Scholars, and ex-Fulbrighters, will interview the candidates. Interviews are usually in English and applicants must be available for the interviews on the day specified by the Commission. Staff members of the Commission have no voting rights. Based on the recommendations of the Selection Committee, the Board of the Fulbright Commission selects the finalists and submits their names for final approval to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in the United States. Selection decisions are final. Selected candidates will be requested to complete the formal applications required by the each program and to meet deadlines specified by the Commission, without exceptions. Grantees and spouses must attend an orientation session prior departure for the U.S. Applications are restricted to Ecuadorian citizens, residing in Ecuador during the complete process. Candidates holding dual Ecuadorian-U.S.citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status are not eligible. Grants are not open to Ecuadorians who are currently studying, researching or teaching in the United States. As the Fulbright Program provides an educational exchange experience to citizens who have not had such opportunity, preference will be given to those candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in the United States. Fulbright grantees enter the United States under sponsorship of the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. The J-1 carries with it the requirement to return to his/her country of origin, upon completion of the program, for two full years before being allowed to re-enter the U.S. under other visa categories (immigrant, temporary worker or intra-company transferee), except as a tourist, student or scholar. Time spent in the U.S. will not count towards fulfilling the aggregate period of two years. Currently we offer the following Fulbright programs for Ecuadorian citizens:
